Ed Husain faz um ponto interessante: Amid this debate about the future trajectory of Western Islam, we may well see a division emerge between Europe and America. The erosion of national identity in this continent, the hangovers of the imperial past, the discomfort with religion, the inability to welcome new immigrants and the intellectual paralysis over what it means to be European today may well affect the Muslim minority. When Europe does not know what it stands for, how can a new community be expected to integrate into it? In contrast, the United States remains robustly patriotic, unashamed of asserting the importance of liberty and democracy, comfortable with “doing God” in public, and proud of its record in persuading newcomers to embrace the American Dream.
Ultimately, what happens among Western Muslims will define our ongoing struggle against Islamist terrorism. If more Muslims here can comfortably marry Islam and modernity, al-Qaeda’s narrative becomes worthless. We need to do all we can to make sure that happens.
