Essa é a melhor descrição da obra de Poe feita no longo poema de James Russell Lowell, A Fable for Critics. Poe é sem dúvida overrated como escritor e era um sujeito mau como um pica-pau, como demonstra sua guerra com Longfellow acusando-o de plagiarismo. A porrada de Lowell em Poe é fantástica:
Messieurs Mathews and Poe,
You mustn't fling mud-balls at Longfellow so,
Does it make a man worse that his character's such
As to make his friends love him (as you thin) too much?

Em uma análise mais fria e completa, Life of Poe, Lowell corretamente ressalta que a genialidade de Poe consiste em juntar uma mente analítica a uma imaginação criativa.
